Chapter 1: Twins
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Kimberly rolled over, wondering where she was. Eyes closed, she purred at the steady heartbeat vibrating under her, sensing the steady hum of someone else’s dreams. Her own heartbeat slowed and steadied, matching itself to the pulse of her pillow, and she felt her body desperately reach for sleep. She decided to obey.
“Amari . . . love? Are you awake?”
“No! Go back to sleep, K’tai. And put your shields up! Do you want to wake the queen? You know she’s been having problems sleeping lately.”
“Don’t know why . . . wish my little niece would talk to me.”
Kim growled as she pulled herself away from her enticing dreams. “I hate it when you call me that, Kae. I’m not your niece.”
“You married my nephew. Same thing. Hope we didn’t wake you.”
Kimberly shook her head, pulling the blankets tighter. “I don’t know what woke me, Kae. Maybe it was . . .” She trailed off, slamming her shields up before her Ninjetti caught her last thought. She sensed Amari and K’tai perk up, both trying to push past their young queen’s mental blocks, but she was too strong. “No. My thoughts are still my own, despite this ridiculously strong mental bond we all managed to develop. Please don’t try to peek.”
“We don’t try, Kim, but there’s something up, and you and Tommy won’t tell us what. We’re your Ninjetti, your family, your warriors. We love you both and we deserve to know. You don’t need to have secrets from us.”
“Everyone has secrets and most know how to keep them. What makes you think you can get mine out of me?”
“Because we love you and we deserve to know. Please, Kim?”
Kimberly bit her bottom lip, opening her crystalline eyes and sitting up, holding the blanket up. She glanced at her husband, sleeping peacefully, and she smiled. “I hope you can forgive me, Tommy,” she whispered, opening her mind. “The reason I haven’t been sleeping so well recently is because . . .” Tommy stirred, her words bringing him closer to consciousness, even as the other Ninjetti woke at the caress of their queen’s mind. Kimberly took a deep breath, steeling herself. “I’m pregnant.”
The deafening silence on the link woke Tommy instantly, and he looked around for a moment, confused, then his eyes settled on his wife. “You told them?”
Kimberly nodded slowly. “I . . . I hope you don’t mind.”
“I was wondering if you ever would.” Tommy sat up as brilliant flashes of light announced the arrival of their Ninjetti, all in various states of undress. K’tai and Amari were the closest to being fully dressed, and they stared at their leaders.
“Are you really, Kimberly?”
“I wouldn’t lie about something like this, K’tai. I really am pregnant.”
The Ninjetti Eagle moved forward, placing a gentle hand on Kimberly’s flat belly as the queen unabashedly dropped her sheet, and the Uranian closed her eyes. “I can sense . . . Kimberly! Twins!”
Kat cleared her throat as the former humans moved forward. “I was wondering when you two would get around to that.” Kimberly blushed, and the pink Ninjetti smiled. “S’rei tells me that Atlantans, especially Ninjetti, know within hours of conception. How long have you been pregnant?”
Kimberly blushed, and Tommy laughed. “Our wedding night,” he answered. He raised his hands in defense as twenty-two Ninjetti jumped on the bed to congratulate the new parents.
K’tai and Amari stepped back, a furiously fast conversation flying between the close minds. There seemed to be a vote, and Amari sighed as she cleared her throat. “As great as this news is, Kamirli, when were you going to tell your people?”
Kimberly glanced at Tommy, eyes turning pale brown in nervousness. “I don’t really know, Amari. I know I was absolutely positive I was pregnant when I told Tommy, but I guess I doubted it later. I’m still not entirely comfortable with this power thing or with being an Atlantan, and especially not with being a queen. Now I’m sure, but I didn’t know how to tell anyone.”
“We do. K’tai and I do, I mean. Why don’t you let us handle these kids for you? We know the ins and outs of Atlantan and Uranian politics.”
“Yeah, especially how to get away from the Councilors,” Aisha laughed, leaning back and resting her hand on Kim’s belly as Tommy handed his wife her robe.
“Hush, you,” Amari growled. “Look, you being pregnant is the greatest thing that could ever happen to both moons, and your people deserve to know.”
“Are you sure this is the best time, Amari? We’re working on relocating to the moon, and the two peoples still aren’t comfortable with each other . . .”
K’tai and Tr’vor smiled as they shooed the Ninjetti off the bed and flanked their friend. “I know, Kimberly, and I know that you aren’t sure if you’re a good queen yet, a queen like Selei and Amiris and Pijone. But these twins are what we need to bring both halves of our societies together. They will be true Descendants of Atlantis, the first in forty-four hundred years, thanks to laws that kept people like K’tai and Amari apart.”
Kimberly shook her head and slipped out of bed, one hand on her belly, as she walked to the balcony and looked down at her capital city. Since the Uranians had been living on Titania for more than four thousand years, their palace was far more magnificent than the Atlantan equivalent on Oberon. There was also more space in the cities on Titania, so both societies and both Councils had voted to have the queen and king live on Titania while the old cities on the Moon were being rebuilt. Many Fallen Atlantans had moved to Titania to be with their lovers, husbands, and wives, and Kimberly was happy that her people were able to live as they wanted to. She stared at the magnificent statue of Selei, baby Kamirli in her arms, and she sighed.
“You don’t understand, Trev. I told you that I was going to change the laws, give men more rights, as many as the people will accept, but what will that do to my son? By the laws of Atlantis and Uranus, our daughter will rule, no matter what, but . . .”
Tommy stood and pulled his own robe on, wrapping his arms around Kimberly. She sighed and leaned into the safety of his embrace. “I know, Beautiful. By the time he grows up, you will have given him the right to hold a title. He’ll make a great duke.”
“Can we not tell them that I’m having twins?”
“They deserve to know . . .”
“Please, Kae?”
The Eagle nodded. “Okay. Just the girl, then. You know, you’re awfully young to be pregnant. Most Atlantans don’t even think about pregnancy until their second century. You’re barely past your second decade. I guess growing up on Earth changed you a little. You’re not the average Atlantan.”
“I know. Believe me, I know.” Kimberly pointed at the city spread beneath the castle. “And they know, too.”
